Life experiences for people with a disabilities… Memories for a lifetime
Meet our Executive Board Members!

Let me introduce our dedicated Camp CaPella Executive Committee. These folks are determined to bring Camp CaPella back to life this summer and for a lifetime of summers.

Joyce Engelmann

Joyce and her family have been associated with Camp CaPella for many years. Her own children worked here as counselors, her daughter was a camper, and her husband, Carl, is a jack of all trades and still maintains the property for UCP. Joyce is a registered nurse and has been here as the Camp nurse for many summers.

Jeff Fitch

Jeff served as a member and Treasurer on the Board of Directors of United Cerebral Palsy for many years, originally coming to UCP as part of the Capital Campaign Committee. He is now focusing his energies only on the Camp CaPella mission. He is a true believer in the Camp as being a place ---“where no one is special”. He can be found at Tate-Fitch CPA’s in Bangor.

Katie Guernsey

Katie has a five-year-old daughter with Rett Syndrome. Her daughter Abby is beautiful. Katie is determined that her Abby will experience Camp CaPella and she has worked toward that end. She has almost single handedly raised nearly $60,000 to get us where we are today and to re-open camp for our children ---and Abby!

Deborah Jordan

Deborah is one of our newest Committee members ---- When asked to consider getting involved she eagerly accepted the position. She resides right here in Dedham and has lived next to Phillips Lake for many years. She has watched the Kids of Camp CaPella as part of her life on the Lake. She is currently Vice President of Merrill Merchant Bank.

Bill Miller

Ever notice the name of Camp CaPella’s main lodge? It’s “Miller Lodge” so named to honor Miller Family’s years of dedication to the kids of Camp CaPella. You can meet Bill at The Miller’s Pharmacy in Bangor or enjoy his Bangor Symphony Orchestra performances.

Ruth Shook

Many of you remember Ruth (Mitchell) Shook. Ruth’s work with United Cerebral Palsy of Northeastern Maine began fifty years ago when she was the young mother of a son with cerebral palsy. As the first Executive Director of UCP, she was instrumental in developing programs for children with disabilities, including the creation of Camp CaPella in 1960. Now retired, Ruth remains a dedicated volunteer serving as “Board” Secretary and Public Relations Chairperson.

Ed Steltzer

There is a large, aluminum swing just up from the beach at Camp CaPella. You can sit there and just watch the loons in peace. It is known as “Allison’s Swing”. It is named in memory of Ed’s wife. Ed believes in the mission of Camp CaPella. It is a part of him.

Pam Ware

In the early 1970’s Pam was the first Executive Director of The Bangor Day Activity Center that grew to become The Multiple Handicap Center of Penobscot Valley. When not working on bringing Camp CaPella back to life, Pam enjoys her “retirement job” in Bangor at The Henry’s Bridal Boutique, also a loyal sponsor of Camp CaPella. Richard Ware (Pam’s husband) volunteers his time in the creation & management of a database program for Camp mailings and reports.
